Parenting Influence

Parenting Influence

Parenting Starts During Pregnancy

Parenting begins when parents become role models for their children. Parenting styles have a significant influence on a child's development from the moment of conception. Positive parenting is essential because it promotes healthy relationships between parents and children.

During pregnancy, both parents should become aware of the responsibility of caring for another human being. They should learn how to demonstrate respect and create a nurturing environment before their new family member arrives. Both parents should develop and practice their parenting styles, establish ground rules, and work toward securing stable housing, financial stability, and the resources necessary to raise a child.

Having a child is a life-changing decision. Parenting begins as soon as pregnancy begins for both future parents. Parenting influences and practices play a vital role in children's development and future well-being. Parents influence their children's future relationships, both directly and indirectly. They transmit behaviors, attitudes, emotions, values, educational expectations, experiences of happiness and sadness, social interactions, reputation, and their children's ability to become active members of society.

Parenting Influence Can Improve a Child's Behavior By:

  • Learning and improving parenting skills to prevent undesirable behaviors.

  • Reducing negative conversations and replacing "Don't do that" with positive expectations.

  • Increasing positive conversations and providing feedback that reinforces desirable behaviors.

  • Acting more and talking less in front of children to model appropriate behavior.

  • Demonstrating empathy and maintaining healthy relationships.

  • Allowing children to learn effective communication from adults who model strong problem-solving skills.

  • Developing a strong support system with people who demonstrate responsibility for their actions and personal well-being.

  • Maintaining employment and establishing a meaningful daily routine at home.

  • Participating in recovery, support, or parenting groups.

  • Practicing relaxation techniques and enjoying life.

Parents Need to Know That Children's Behavior Is Influenced By:

Impulsivity of Parents and Other Adults Around Children

Impulsive parents are more likely to raise impulsive children, who eventually become the next generation of adults. Impulsivity can contribute to negative behaviors and poor decision-making.

The Communication Environment Between Parents, Children, and Other Adults

Communication is one of the most effective ways to connect with children and promote healthy development. Parents who encourage positive communication at home are better able to solve problems and serve as positive role models for their children.

Children learn how to express and manage their emotions by observing the communication patterns they experience at home. Communication takes many forms, and parents have the opportunity to teach their children respectful and effective ways to communicate.

Parents who communicate with kindness, respect, and empathy teach their children how to build healthy relationships. Children first develop their social-emotional skills at home, and later, teachers reinforce these skills at school, helping them continue to grow.

Parenting and Empathy

Parenting and empathy are essential components of healthy childhood development. Empathy is the ability to understand, share, and respond appropriately to another person's feelings while providing support—or asking for help—when needed.

A lack of empathy increases the risk of unhealthy relationships and negative social behaviors. Teaching empathy from an early age helps children develop self-control, emotional awareness, compassion, and stronger interpersonal skills that prepare them for every stage of life.

Family Structure Matters

Parents with unhealthy lifestyle habits, unhealthy social behaviors, or limited parenting experience may benefit from participating in parenting education classes to better understand healthy relationships and effective parenting practices.

Some individuals may not have had the opportunity to learn what a healthy family environment looks like or how to respond constructively when challenges arise. Before becoming parents, individuals should develop self-awareness, establish family goals, and create a clear vision for their role as caregivers.

Whether parents live together or apart, children benefit most from being raised in a stable, safe, loving, and supportive environment. Effective parenting depends more on the quality of caregiving than on family structure alone.

Parenting education helps families develop the knowledge and skills needed to create healthy home environments. We can find two-parent households with ineffective parenting practices, just as we can find single-parent households that provide strong structure, consistency, love, and guidance.

A child's development is greatly influenced by the parent or caregivers who provide basic needs, emotional security, and social-emotional learning. Marital conflict or ongoing family conflict can affect the family environment and place stress on parenting relationships. Children raised in environments that are excessively strict, inconsistent, or lacking emotional warmth may experience greater difficulty making positive decisions and building healthy relationships.

Attachment, Parenting Behavior, and the Environment Affect Children

Attachment is the emotional bond that develops through a close, loving, and affectionate relationship between two people. This bond promotes trust, security, and emotional support. When parents choose to raise a child together, both should work to build a strong attachment with one another and with their child. They should also establish clear rules, healthy boundaries, and consistent expectations.

The positive effects of parental guidance are most evident in a warm, nurturing, and supportive family environment. When parents develop a secure and positive bond with their child, they provide the foundation for healthy behavior, emotional security, and positive developmental skills.

The family environment and the way parents nurture attachment play a critical role in child development. Some parents establish an emotional bond with their children but may not consistently model appropriate behaviors. Both attachment and parenting style influence children's behavior and overall development.

When the parent-child relationship is built on love, trust, and consistency, children are more likely to develop confidence, emotional resilience, and healthy social behaviors. Children's developmental skills are directly influenced by the quality of attachment and the parenting behaviors they experience throughout childhood.

Parents' behaviors, together with a supportive home environment, strengthen attachment and help children internalize positive social values. As a result, children become better prepared to solve problems, make responsible decisions, and respond appropriately to moral and social challenges.

Creating a positive family environment while practicing nurturing and consistent parenting can produce lifelong benefits. Positive parenting helps reduce behavioral problems, strengthens family relationships, and decreases the likelihood of risky or antisocial behaviors during adolescence and adulthood.

Children who experience isolation and neglect during early childhood may be at greater risk of developing social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Likewise, children who receive limited affection and emotional support from their parents are more likely to display anger, aggression, and difficulty forming healthy relationships later in life.
